Music lovers were pleasantly surprised to hear Barb’s Beaux perform as the first act after intermission when the Sarasota Pops presented “Broadway Celebrates Love” at Riverview Performing Arts Center on February 8th at 3:00 p.m.
Barb is Barbara Cornell, originator and director of the Sarasota all-men’s chorus known as “Barb’s Beaux.” A music teacher for 34 years in Westhampton Beach, NY, Barb has directed every kind of concert and show imaginable. She specializes in tuba, voice and piano. Armed with two masters’ degrees – one in education and the other in gerontology – the 75-year-old “retiree” started Barb’s Beaux last year with five members, all residents of The Fountains at Lake Pointe Woods, where Barb also resides.
Barb’s Beaux men’s chorus currently has nine singing members. Their ages range from 70-something to 98 years young. All are amateur singers who sing purely for the love of music and performing. The piano accompanist, at 95, is the eldest singer’s bride. Having performed to high acclaim from neighbors, family and friends, their performance during the Sarasota Pops show on February 8th was their public debut.
