PRIVACY PLUS
Why risk loneliness, fear or boredom living alone when so many options offer privacy, security and a built in social life?

“…one thing about The Fountains, people respect your privacy. But they are also open to be with you and talk to you if you choose to do so. It’s the best of both possible worlds.” – Ann Orkin, resident of The Fountains at Lake Pointe Woods

MEET ANN ORKIN, AN ENGLISH DEPARTMENT ADMINISTRATOR TURNED ARTICULATE AMBASSADOR OF RETIREMENT COMMUNITY LIVING.
You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. (All quotes contained in this post are excerpts from an interview conducted with Ann Orkin on Monday, August 7th, 2017. To read the full, un-edited transcript, please click here.)

In 1950, Ann Orkin moved from the Bronx, New York to Miami Beach, Florida, where she directed the English department of a private school. Ann and her husband raised two daughters before retiring to Sarasota, which appealed to their affinity for the arts. They enjoyed life at University Park Country Club for 13 years before her husband passed away. After five years living as a widow in a couples’ world, Ann moved to The Fountains at Lake Pointe Woods. She gave up none of her privacy and gained days filled with freedom, friends, fitness classes and committee work which, in her words, “makes you feel good to be alive.”

RIGHT MOVE, RIGHT TIME
When it comes to situating yourself for your best possible future, the biggest mistake you can make is waiting until you feel “ready.” You see, it’s quite possible that you’ll never feel “ready” to make such a move, even though the time is right. So, stop waiting for some feeling to wash over you and get busy making a plan. The more retirement communities you examine over time, the more prepared you’ll be to start your next chapter and make it a great one. “I think I moved at the right time. I’m still able to drive, not at night but I’m still able to drive, I’m still able to do things out in the community. I don’t think I was quite ready to make that move but when I did, it was the right time.” – Ann Orkin

FOUR GOOD REASONS TO MOVE
Most people can think of one or two good reasons for wanting to make a positive change in their lives. Ann rattles off four in rapid succession. As a widow, she was tired of the responsibilities of a home; she had more space than she needed; her good friends were beginning to shift to different areas; and she was having trouble with her eyes. These factors fueled her five-year exploration of options, landing her in a spacious one-bedroom Fountains residence. “I felt that I would eventually need to be in a place where transportation is offered and I knew that the buses here do go to various activities and this was very important….”  – Ann Orkin

NOTHING BUT PRAISE
While Ann is well situated for all the years ahead, she lives for today. In fact, she’s so busy enjoying life now, she doesn’t have the time to volunteer as much as she used to. Ann believes her daughters are just as pleased as she is that she is “comfortable, happy, secure and taken care of.” “The food is phenomenal, the people are delightful, the administration is accommodating. I have nothing but praise.” – Ann Orkin
