IS YOUR HEAD IN THE SAND?
If you retired to Florida 10 or more years ago, change is coming. Start planning your best future today.
“…as it turns out I’m actually closer to downtown here at The Fountains than I was when I lived over in Turtle Rock on Palmer Ranch. I have been very pleased with that and I’ve been very pleased with the staff here and the food here is excellent.” – Bob West, resident of The Fountains at Lake Pointe Woods
MEET BOB WEST, WHO MADE HIS MOVE TO THE FOUNTAINS AFTER 17 YEARS AT TURTLE ROCK ON PALMER RANCH.
You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. (All quotes contained in this post are excerpts from an interview conducted with Bob West on Tuesday, November 1st, 2016. To read the full, un-edited transcript, please click here.)
A father of three, Bob’s career in pharmaceuticals took his family to Philly, Stamford, Chicago and Fairfax before he retired with his wife to Palmer Ranch. After she passed away, he hung onto their house there for eight more years. Then he discovered carefree living at The Fountains at Lake Pointe Woods. Only ten minutes from Palmer Ranch, he never even realized it was there! Bob still shops at the same stores, visits the YMCA three days a week and attends classes at the Lifelong Learning Academy. The biggest difference is now he’s situated for all the years ahead. His beautiful two-bedroom residence is large enough to entertain guests and easy to leave when he travels.
GET OUT YOUR CRYSTAL BALL
If sailing, swimming, tennis and golf are the sorts of pleasures you currently enjoy, you have a lot of life yet to live. Which is precisely why now is the best time to start planning your next chapters. If you intend to stay fit, share camaraderie, take up new interests and continue your vital life regardless of what the future holds, act on those intentions. Anticipate change and proactively situate yourself where you’ll be able to access everything you need, without dependence on your spouse, family or friends. “While you still have your health, do it and take advantage of the activities and the social interactions, etc. And as time goes on, if you have to go into assisted living, you will do it. You’ll have it right there and you won’t have to worry about where you’re going to go.” – Bob West
PROACTIVE STEPS SECURE YOUR INDEPENDENCE
At Turtle Rock, Bob was reaching the point where he didn’t want to worry about who is going to take care of the lawn, the air conditioning and “all that jazz.” With daughters in Chicago, Indianapolis and Alexandria, he wanted to take proactive measures now to ensure his continued independence without ever burdening his children. He looked at six or eight retirement communities in the area before moving in last June. “The handwriting was on the wall….Really when you are on your own you need to really foresee this and put the steps in place so you can be ready for the next eventuality, if you will.” – Bob West
GREAT FOOD SELECTIONS AND MORE
Bob’s an able cook but says he’s getting spoiled by the chef. Try the food, he recommends; it’s an important part of exploring your options. “Wednesday is prime rib which is excellent. I’ll probably have fish, which I do at least three or four nights a week here. And I’m glad to see that they do have a fish offering every night and they also have a salmon every night of the week. You can get it poached, broiled, steamed or even in a salad if you want. You can’t beat that from a health standpoint.” – Bob West
