DON’T GET THE WRONG IDEA
Retirement communities are not what you might imagine them to be. You have to visit and see for yourself.

“I think that people have a very wrong perception…. I think people think of nursing homes versus retirement center and they just have the wrong idea because they don’t come and visit.” – Joyann Lang, resident of The Fountains at Lake Pointe Woods

MEET JOYANN LANG, WHO DOESN’T MIND BEING THE FOUNTAINS’ YOUNGEST RESIDENT AT 62.
You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. (All quotes contained in this post are excerpts from an interview conducted with Joyann Lang on Wednesday, May 6th, 2015. To read the full, un-edited transcript, please click here.)

Joyann never thought too much about age and she certainly doesn’t let it interfere with her enjoyment of life. The youngest in her family, she was always around older people and it was no big deal marrying Raymond*, her husband, 21 years her senior. When she became the youngest resident of The Fountains, she didn’t bat an eye. Joyann starts her days with a morning walk and enjoys socializing with friendly neighbors, playing bridge, visiting the salon, sitting by the pool and otherwise taking in the natural beauty of 53 acres of lakes and trees. She loves to cook but she also appreciates the fact that she can have lunches and dinners with friends at Café del Sol at The Fountains.

*Shortly after this interview, Joyann’s husband Raymond unexpectedly passed away. Joyann wished to proceed with plans to share her story in hopes that other couples would benefit from the information she shares. Our condolences to Joyann and Raymond’s entire family.

YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED
You may even be a bit shocked by what you see, once you start doing your research. A simple visit for lunch or coffee might open your eyes – and your mind – to retirement living. The Langs were able to choose their paint and new carpet and even had hardwood floors installed for the main part of their Villa, to make it just right for them. “At first my husband was a little resistant to it. But we came here and did a tour and my husband said, ‘Write
a check.’” – Joyann Lang

NO SNOW AND MANY BIRDS
Joyann and Raymond moved to Sarasota County as snowbirds from Rochester, NY in 1987. They moved from a Siesta Key condo to a home in Osprey and later Nokomis. Now they are year-round residents. “It’s a beautiful area. If I never see another snowflake it will be fine with me,” said Joyann. When good friends introduced them to The Fountains, Joyann was all for moving again, to live near her old friends and travelling buddies. After one visit, Raymond was, as well. “The grounds here of course are beautiful. And it’s a beautiful place to walk around. I walk around as the sun is coming up. It’s so pretty and the clouds, it’s just really pretty. So many birds, oh their birds are beautiful.” – Joyann Lang

IT’S A DOG’S LIFE
Joyann’s dog Sam, a Bedlington Terrier also enjoys life at The Fountains. He has his own terrific back yard which is the perfect size for him and the easy lifestyle is just right for Joyann, as well. “We lived in a fairly large home in Nokomis and we had a big pool and lanai area and we just weren’t using that. We were getting tired of maintenance issues… We really wanted something smaller. This is really a great area to be in because it’s so close to so many, many things.” – Joyann Lang
