SURPRISE OF YOUR LIFE
How can anybody possibly know they’re not going to like retirement community living if they don’t at least take a look?
“…my initial response was, ‘Oh no, I’m not going to go to anyplace like that.’ I can’t tell you how wonderful this is.” – Julian “Jay” Rabow, resident of The Fountains at Lake Pointe Woods
MEET JULIAN “JAY” RABOW, A LIFELONG SAILOR WHO LEFT LONGBOAT KEY FOR A LIFESTYLE HE LOVES AT THE FOUNTAINS.
You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. (All quotes contained in this post are excerpts from an interview conducted with Julian “Jay” Rabow on Tuesday, February 7th, 2017. To read the full, un-edited transcript, please click here.)
Jay was born and raised in Buffalo, where he owned and sold a packaging manufacturing business. Retiring with his wife to Longboat Key, they spent 19 amazing winters sailing in the Bahamas. When his wife suddenly came down with an incurable illness, Jay sold their sailboat to take care of her. After she passed away last March, Jay’s children hated to see him alone and convinced him to look into retirement community living. Now he has a whole new enjoyable lifestyle centered on friendships. He dines with different friends every day, plays tennis three times a week, swims laps in The Fountains heated pool, takes art classes, attends lectures and so much more.
LET’S BE HONEST
Living happily ever after is the stuff of fairy tales, but that doesn’t mean you can’t live happily for all the years ahead. A little advance planning is all it takes. Why wait another day to begin exploring your retirement living options? “We all have to consider the fact that someday we are going to go. If it’s a couple, one is going to be left alone and I think that it would be very, very wise for older couples to give serious thought to moving in advance to a place like this so that they are established when the final day comes for one of you. It just makes so much sense. I wouldn’t have realized it so readily before but I certainly do based on my observations and my own experience here since I’ve been here.” – Jay Rabow
With encouragement from his family, Jay looked at every option in Sarasota before moving to The Fountains with his dog. In no time, he discovered he’d made the right move. “…the first two months that I was in residence here, not knowing anyone when I moved in, I did not eat one dinner by myself. Every evening there was a note in my mailbox or a telephone call or some kind of a date for dinner with people that I didn’t know but who knew that I was a new resident because my picture and bio was posted on a bulletin board here. And each night I had dinner with somebody new.” – Jay Rabow
DISCOVER WHAT’S MISSING
You don’t know what you’re missing until you experience it. As Jay ultimately discovered, there are better options than living alone in a condo. “The thing that was lacking, and the kids were right about this, that you need people around, there’s got to be activity, there’s got to be people around that you have conversations with, somebody to have dinner with, somebody to go to the movies with. So they were absolutely right. Although, I had never thought that I would ever be in this kind of a facility I’m certainly glad that I made that decision.” – Jay Rabow
