IT’S A GOOD IDEA
If you agree that moving to a retirement community is a good idea, then it’s time to put thoughts into action.

“I am freer to do more things that I couldn’t do before, whether I wanted to volunteer or whatever. And since I’ve been here I love it. I like the idea.” – Thelma Gordon, resident of The Fountains at Lake Pointe Woods

MEET THELMA GORDON, AN AVID BOATER ENJOYING SMOOTH SAILING AT THE FOUNTAINS.
You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. (All quotes contained in this post are excerpts from an interview conducted with Thelma Gordon on Monday, July 27th, 2015. To read the full, un-edited transcript, please click here.)

Thelma and Irwin met in Boston in 1946. He joined the Navy and she became a stock broker, then marriage and two children followed. When they moved to Sarasota, they started their own real estate business and enjoyed racing sail boats up and down the coast from their home in South Pointe Shores. Now, they’re happily settled in at The Fountains. Thelma lives in the Town Center and Irwin resides in The Springs, where they enjoy the lifestyle and care they deserve. Thelma is a gourmet cook and enjoys the complimentary cooking classes, but prefers to let the chef delight her. Whenever she wants to go to the Oslo or Florida studio, she lets The Fountains drive and avoids the parking hassle. Now they’re able to enjoy their time together without all the worries of home maintenance.

ALWAYS A GOOD TIME
You can go through life wishing you didn’t have to do the shopping and meal preparation and you can long for the day that someone else will pay the landscaper, pool service and maid. Or you can put your thoughts into action, like Thelma and Irwin Gordon did, and move to a retirement community. While choosing the right retirement community is easy, the timing can feel a bit tricky. Thelma didn’t realize how good their timing was until a month after moving in, when her husband Irwin was hospitalized unexpectedly. Thankfully, he was able to receive rehabilitation right next door at The Springs.
The key is not to over think the timing of your move because as long as you think retirement living is a good idea, it’s always a good time. “I think I made a great decision, I really do, to come here.” – Thelma Gordon

MORE LIKE HEAVEN THAN HOME
Taking care of a house, yard and boats in South Pointe Shore was getting to be a real chore. One day, Thelma told a friend, “You know, I’m getting tired of doing all the work.” The friend said, “Why don’t you start looking?” “We did visit many places that all seemed very nice. But this one felt more like home. Everyone was welcoming to us,” Thelma said. So, with the help of a relocation specialist that packed and unpacked everything, they moved seamlessly into their spacious apartment in the spring of 2015. I mean, all of a sudden it seems like I’m kind of in heaven, but I know better. I’m happy here.” – Thelma Gordon

OVERWHELMING SUPPORT
One of the first things Thelma noticed was the service minded staff. “The employees seem to want to help you. They can’t do enough for you,” she said. Thelma wasted no time getting involved. “In the evening, after dinner, there’s always something to do,” explains Thelma, “whether we’re going to a play, whether there’s things going on here or also there are games.” Thelma was also blown away by the overwhelming support she received after Irwin’s health scare. “Being here I made some close friends and many friends very quickly. I mean they’re just, it’s like a family.” – Thelma Gordon
