START PLANNING YOUR BEST FUTURE
Even if moving is the last thing on your mind, it’s never too soon to explore your retirement living options.
“I just feel that, you know, the older you get, the harder it is for the move.” – Joan Rice, resident of The Fountains at Lake Pointe Woods
MEET DAVE AND JOAN RICE, BOSTON TRANSPLANTS MARRIED 60 YEARS AND LOVING LIFE AT THE FOUNTAINS.
You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. (All quotes contained in this post are excerpts from an interview conducted with David and Joan Rice on Thursday, May 4th, 2017 To read the full, un-edited transcript, please click here.)
After Dave and Joan graduated from Tufts and Lasell College, respectively, Dave served four years of active duty in the Navy. Then they settled down and raised their two boys in Boston. Dave went on to serve 23 years in the Navy Reserve while building his career as a food distributor. After the boys went off to college, Joan worked part time as a hair stylist. They moved to Florida in 1994 and thoroughly enjoyed their years at Rosedale Golf and Country Club before moving into their “perfect size” 1,700-square foot, two-bedroom, two-bath residence at the end of 2016. Relieved of home and yard maintenance responsibilities, they enjoy swimming, fitness classes, musical performances and beach cookouts.
NOT JUST ANY PORT
Sailors will choose any port in a storm but when it comes to planning your best future, couples like Dave and Joan Rice recommend choosing a retirement community long before the seas get rough. At first, Dave wasn’t keen on the whole idea of moving. Now at 81, he’s glad they did their homework and moved to The Fountains when they did. “This move was driven by my wife. She was the one who felt that it was time to move and I was kind of a reluctant follower. And her reason for wanting to move was that down the road she did not want to have the responsibility of living in a single-family home and having to sell it and having to find someplace to live and making new friends and so forth.” – Dave Rice, resident of The Fountains at Lake Pointe Woods
A BEAUTIFUL FIT
Compared to other communities Dave and Joan visited, The Fountains was a beautiful fit. To Joan’s surprise, everything from their country club home fit nicely in their apartment overlooking the tree tops. While their two lanais are ideal for keeping potted plants, the rest of the 55 acres of manicured lakes, tree-lined pathways and welcoming amenities are also theirs to enjoy, without the work. “It really is beautiful. It does look like a resort and many, many people have said that, ‘This doesn’t look like a retirement place, it looks like a resort.’ It really is lovely.” – Joan Rice
FRIENDS, FLEXIBILITY AND MORE
Thanks to a warm reception, it took Dave only two months to feel at home. Four months after their move they can rattle off ten couples they consider good friends and dinner mates. Of course, being close to Bradenton, they keep in touch with their old friends, too. “We have the Classic Plan which means that we don’t go to every meal every day in the dining room. We go when we want to go and sometimes we eat in our apartment and sometimes we go out in the community and have dinner.” – Dave Rice
