Resident Alice Shaw is Enjoying an Active Lifestyle and Extraordinary Outings at The Fountains

The right opportunities appear when you’re ready for them. Are you ready to create your own best future?

“I knew it was the right time for me at this time. Last year I would’ve said “no.” This year it’s time and I’m glad I made the decision.” – Alice Shaw, resident of The Fountains at Lake Pointe Woods

You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. Originally from Vermont, Alice met her husband, Roger, in Boston. Moving around for his job, they lived in New Jersey, Iowa and Connecticut before tiring of the snow and building their Sarasota retirement home in Deer Creek. After Roger passed away, Alice downsized to a condo in Phillippi Landings. She felt too young for a retirement community. Nevertheless, she encouraged many peers to make their moves. One day her son, Brad, pointed out that The Fountains’ lifestyle suited her active, independent spirit to a tee and Alice realized he was right. The next day, she picked out a beautiful two-bedroom, two-bath apartment on the ground floor and in March 2017, she made it her own.

When Alice Shaw was in her twenties, she was having too much fun working to think about settling down. One day, after seeing so many of her friends marry, she decided it was time to begin her own new chapter. And like magic, her future husband appeared. Now that Alice is on her own again after 47 years of marriage, she’s not interested in romance but she did fall in love with The Fountains. And it happened in much the same way. The thought of moving to a retirement community had never even crossed Alice’s mind until one day, after looking at The Fountains for a friend, she decided she was ready and The Fountains was the one. “I love it. So far I have no regrets and I plan on this being my very last move.” – Alice Shaw

One thing that makes The Fountains so special, in Alice’s experience, is the people. She enjoys dining with friends and thinks the food is good, maybe even a bit too good for her waistline. While some of her neighbors like to be busy all the time, Alice enjoys quiet time and is perfectly happy reading a book. Sometimes she’ll join a game of Trivial Pursuit or watch a movie in the community’s Cinema and she’s always up for group trips to places like Key West. “I enjoy all the traveling that they do without having to drive or plan the events so that is one special thing I do like about The Fountains.” – Alice Shaw

Alice loves being in her apartment, especially her patio and sunroom. Sarasota’s year round sunshine reminds her how grateful she is to have left the snow. She uses her spare bedroom as a den. It has a pullout sofa that’s convenient when family members pop down from Indian Rocks Beach. “I live in the sunroom so I can look out on the patio and see all my flowers and plants and I still like that it’s very private. I love it…. It’s just a nice and quiet and peaceful apartment and I love it.” – Alice Shaw
