Resident Arline Stern is Enjoying a Vibrant Community and Friendly Neighbors at The Fountains

Why put off moving to the right retirement community when you know the active, worry-free lifestyle will help you live well longer?

“I think the people here are terrific. It will extend my life, I believe… You just know that this is a different stage of your life. I feel fortunate that I can be here and live like this.” – Arline Stern, resident of The Fountains at Lake Pointe Woods

You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. (All quotes contained in this post are excerpts from an interview conducted with Arline Stern on Tuesday, November 1st, 2016. To read the full, un-edited transcript, please click here.)

A ceramic artist for 60 years, Arline is a mother of three. Widowed at a young age, the New York City native lived in Central Florida for 16 years. When her daughter moved to Long Boat Key this year, she decided to look for an independent living arrangement nearby. She found exactly what she wanted and moved to The Fountains last February. At 87, Arline still drives and enjoys an active social life. Several days a week you’ll find her working on her large mosaic table top in The Fountains’ beautiful Nat Krate Art Studio. She also enjoys Fountains’ outings to places like the Ringling and Dali and looks forward to monthly lectures at the community by visiting art historian Baila Miller.

Living on your own may feel like the right thing do to, but you do have choices and you’ll never find more opportunities for living well then you’ll find in the right retirement community. Whether you’re 65 or 95, Fountains residents like Arline Stern know that living well begins with a positive attitude and a realistic outlook. At The Fountains, Arline enjoys getting up early and meeting friends for breakfast before heading to the art studio or water aerobics. Come evening she enjoys drinks and dinner with different friends. Is your present lifestyle affording you the opportunities you crave? “I enjoy my life and I would say you have to get over the fact that it’s not like a home, like an old lady’s home, an old person’s home. It’s a vibrant community. And everybody is here to enjoy themselves.” – Arline Stern

Arline’s friends in Maitland were sad to see her go and couldn’t believe that she, of all people, was moving to a retirement community. Now that she’s here, those same friends, who have visited, can see very clearly why she’s so happy with her choice. “…they didn’t believe I broke up my old gang. They said, ‘You’re moving to independent living?’ Because I’m such an independent person so I said, ‘Well, I want to move in when I’m well.’ And that’s the time. I don’t want to wait until something happens, so I’ll be here and my daughter doesn’t have to worry. My sons don’t have to worry.” – Arline Stern

Arline selected a third floor apartment with a cathedral ceiling that showcases her art. Her open lanai faces the trees and is both home to her plants and a playground for her cats, Kami and Klay. “I came here to The Fountains and I liked the appearance and the landscaping and the low buildings right away. And I met people. The people were friendly, so friendly. And I liked the small size of it, but what really made me move here, we have a big artists’ studio here and I said, ‘Oh, I’m in heaven.’” – Arline Stern
