Resident Mike Miller is Enjoying His Easy-Go-Lucky Lifestyle at The Fountains

Attitude isn’t everything. Your environment, friends and support system can make all the difference.

“Many of the residents say it is like living in a country club and it really is… It’s definitely an easier life. Easy-go-lucky is I guess the best way to express it.” – Mike Miller, resident of The Fountains at Lake Pointe Woods

You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. (All quotes contained in this post are excerpts from an interview conducted with Mike Miller on Tuesday, May 26th, 2015. To read the full, un-edited transcript, please click here.)

A Baltimore native, Mike moved to Sarasota 20 years ago. Now, he says “you couldn’t get me back north if you shot me full of money.” He prefers swimming, sailing and shuffleboard to shoveling snow and who can blame him? A dedicated volunteer, Mike has worked for two Sarasota circuses, often in clown nose. He has also raised five seeing-eye dogs for Southeastern Guide Dogs. The fifth, a Goldadore named Squire, lives with Mike in a first floor apartment at The Fountains. Mike and Squire walk two to three miles every day. Once a month, Squire even gets to snuggle with residents of the assisted living neighborhood. “He’s very happy here. He gets treated royally, like a king. The women love him,” said Mike.

“My children were very upset that I didn’t move north after their mother died. So I told them that when I was 70 years old I would move back and then I forgot about it and then on my 70th birthday my daughter called me up and she said, ‘Dad are you ready for us to come down and pack you up?’ I said, ‘I changed my mind. I’m going to stay here until I’m 75.’ So 75 came…my son called me, ‘Hey dad I got the truck unloaded. I’m ready to come down and load it up.’ I said, ‘No, not ready, when I’m 80.’ When I’m 80 I called them up and said, ‘Don’t even bother to call me because I’m not moving up there. I’m going to move into The Fountains.’” – Mike Miller

With his therapy dogs, Mike visited nearly every retirement community in Sarasota, from north to south. He took a shine to The Fountains. “The staff that I’ve met over the past six or eight years are excellent people, well liked. I’ve always enjoyed dealing with them. And then the residents are in a class all by themselves because they’re friendly, they’re good-natured and all of this I recognized over a period of years. Two years ago, on my 80th birthday, I made up my mind that I was going to move into one of these types of establishments. And to me there is none better than this one here in the Sarasota area.” – Mike Miller

Meal times are social times and Mike proudly points out that he’s enjoyed dining with at least 70 different neighbors his first two months alone. One night he even showed up in his clown suit to sing happy birthday to a neighbor’s great grandchild! I think the food here is absolutely outstanding. In fact “I think it’s on country club level to be honest with you. We have four chefs here. Two of them work in the Café and two of them work in the dining room and they switch off. And they are just excellent cooks.” – Mike Miller
