Residents Dick and Jean Georgiades’ are Enjoying Their Semi-Retired Lifestyle at The Fountains

The sooner you begin planning, the better off you’ll be.

“I am more of a planner than probably my husband but we had been thinking in these terms for at least the last two years…” – Jean Georgiades, resident of The Fountains at Lake Pointe Woods

You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. (All quotes contained in this post are excerpts from an interview conducted with Jean Georgiades on Monday, July 27th, 2015. To read the full, un-edited transcript, please click here.)

Dick came to Sarasota in 1960 to start his dental practice and Jean’s been with him every step of the way. They raised their two sons and now one of them is carrying on the dental tradition, working alongside his dad. Dick enjoys working mornings while he and Jean spend their “free time” in various community service projects. Jean has volunteered with Resurrection House, SPARCC, Selah Freedom, SMH and Church of Palms. Dick has volunteered with the Sarasota Little League for 26 years, the Senior Friendship Center and Kiwanis Club. Dick’s also a Rays season ticket holder going on 19 years. Jean enjoys reading, luncheons with friends, book clubs, antiquing and being involved in their three grandchildren’s activities. The kids love visiting them at The Fountains, their home since January 2015.

The best reason to start evaluating your retirement living options is because you can, not because you have to. Putting off the process will only limit your options but if you start now, you can shape your future as you want. Examining your alternatives will take some time. You’ll want to take tours, sample menus and talk to residents. The discovery process will open your eyes to the possibilities and it can be fun! So bring a friend and enjoy the ride. “We started really getting serious about looking for an independent living while we are able and still independent. And that we would have it done and our two sons would not have any, you know, responsibility as far as getting us into a place if we could not do that. And we are very, very glad that we did it when we did.” – Jean Georgiades

Dick and Jean lived in a two-story colonial for 32 years before downsizing into a two-story villa for the next 18 years. Three years ago, they realized if they ever were going to move to a retirement community, the ideal time to do it would be now, when they are active, independent and capable of making their own best choices. Two years after setting their plan in motion, they moved into their spacious, single-story Fountains villa. “It’s a two bedroom, Dick had to have a den or an office and that was another thing that sold us on this. And then there’s the sunroom which is our family room. It’s lovely. Plenty of space for us.” – Jean Georgiades

Jean still cooks and entertains but loves the option of joining friends for dinner at The Fountains and just calling maintenance whenever something needs fixing. “The grounds are beautiful here. They’re kept up so nice. It’s just so pleasant to go out and walk around. And at night it is so pretty with the gazebo lit up and everything, which we look out on. And you know, whatever comes, comes, that we feel very safe and secure in a place like this because everything is here that we might need in the future.” – Jean Georgiades
