At The Inn, we were able to welcome three members from the Islamic Society of Sarasota/Bradenton. Nazia Abid, Amani Makarita and Shiraz Hassan gave an in depth presentation about Ramadan, the ninth month of the Muslim year, during which strict fasting is observed from sunrise to sunset. They were able to give our residents feedback about the struggles and rewards of this Muslim tradition. Each presenter explained their background and how their culture may have been different than their co-presenters. They also gave us insight to how they made it through the fast. After the presentation, the residents and presenters visited with each other while enjoying a juicy watermelon treat. We chose to have watermelon because it is a go to food item when Muslims break their fast.
